Making Wine From Grapes

In the ordinary way, recipes for wines made entirely from grapes are not a practicable proposition. This is because grapes are merely crushed and fermented without either sugar or water being added. Provided you have enough grapes, making wines from them is the simplest winemaking of all-that is, of course, provided they are fully ripe. Small unpruned bunches often contain a lot of small undeveloped fruits between the large juicy ones and these must be removed before the bunches are crushed. The whole bunches, stalk as well, are used as these add something to the wine. The yeast forming the bloom on your grapes may be the kind that will make excellent wine, but we cannot be sure of this owing to the near-certainty that wild yeast and bacteria are present with it. As we have seen in previous chapters, we must destroy these yeasts and bacteria and add yeasts of our choice to make the wine for us.

You will need at least twenty pounds of grapes to be assured of a gallon of wine-and this amount may not make one gallon of wine, though it make one gallon of strained 'must'. Therefore the more grapes you have the better.

If enough grapes are available, the process is as follows:

METHOD: Put all grapes in a suitable vessel and crush them, making sure each grape is crushed. Measure as near as you can or judge as accurately as possible the amount of pulp you have and to each gallon allow one Campden tablet or four grains of sodium metabisulphite. Dissolve this in an egg cupful of warm water and stir into the pulp and leave for twenty-four hours.

After this, give the mixture a thorough mixing and churning and then add the yeast. The mixture should then be left to ferment for five days.

Following this, the pulp should be strained through a strong coarse cloth to prevent bursting and wrung out as dry as you can. The liquor should then be put into jars and fermented the same ways as other wines.

A good plan when doing this is to mix a quart of water with grape pulp and to crush this well to get as much from the skins as you can. If you do this, you must add one pound of sugar and dissolve it by warming the juice just enough for this purpose. This thinner juice may be mixed with the rest but before the better quality juice is put into jars.

Where grapes only are used with water (as suggested above) it must be borne in mind that to get enough alcohol for a stable wine we must have between two and two and a half pounds of sugar to the gallon. Juice crushed from grapes rarely contains this much, therefore it would be wise to add one pound when the fruit is crushed and before the juice is put into jars. If the wine turns out dry, it may be sweetened.

We may use a hydrometer to find the sugar content so that we know how much to add to give the amount of alcohol we need, but this is not for beginners without previous experiences in this sort of thing. The better plan is to follow my suggestions above, and if the wine is dry to sweeten it and then preserve it with Campden tablets or metabisulphite.

Since the color comes from the skins, if we want a red wine from black grapes we ferment the skins as directed earlier in this chapter. A white wine from black grapes is made by crushing the grapes and pressing out the juice and fermenting the juice only. The difference in the process already described is that instead of fermenting the skin for five days, the juice is pressed out after it has been allowed to soak for twenty-four hours.
If you happen to be making some of the fruit wine such as elderberry, plum, blackberry or damson, at the same time as making grape wine, it would be a good idea to put the strained fruit pulp which would otherwise be discarded into the 'must' of the other fruit and let it ferment there.

Airfare Deals - Be Cautious!

Ah, there's nothing better than taking a vacation. Daydreaming about an island breeze seducing you into an afternoon nap or planning your hiking adventure, any concept of an escape is always welcome. Unlike some people, I absolutely love planning my vacations. I love finding information on different destinations and looking for those great hotel and airfare deals. The best hotel and airfare deals are usually found when purchasing a vacation package, but once in a while, you can get great discounts when purchasing separately. The internet has tons of sites that will gladly help you find the airfare deals you are seeking. I have found and been very impressed with several sites because of their accuracy. I booked an amazing airfare deal through Orbitz last year, and saved more money than I would have otherwise. I can't tell you which travel sites are the best because I've compared many of them before and found that most of them are pretty much offering the same exact deal, just perhaps a few dollars different. In all honesty, my travel agent wasn't charging me much more than those sites were. Sure, it was maybe $20 more, but maybe that's worth the convenience of having the agent take care of all the details for you. I suppose it depends on your budget and need for someone else to take care of all the details. My absolute favorite vacation was a trip to California. I live on the east coast so a trip to the west coast was very exciting. I spent an entire week comparing hotel prices and costs of entertainment. Once I had my destinations planned, I spent a few days researching airfare deals. It actually amazed me at how different each airline was with its cost. I did manage to find some great airfare deals online and took advantage of them. A lot of resorts, such as Sandals, allow you to purchase a package with includes airfare and hotel accommodations. I've never taken the time to break down all of the costs and see which purchase is the best way to go, but in my opinion, instead of searching for amazing airline deals and hotel rates, go for the package. Let someone else take care of all of the details for you. That makes vacation planning much less stressful. Be cautious of those amazing airfare deals that have lots of restrictions in fine print. Read all of those tiny words and make sure you aren't purchasing something that you don't really want. Sometimes you can get airfare deals that require many layovers or late night flights. I am personally fine with taking a night flight but can't stand layovers. Once I'm on a plane, don't make me move until I'm at my destination. If those restrictions don't bother you, you may find yourself getting some great money saving airfare deals. Whatever hotel you stay at or airline you choose, just make sure you have a wonderful vacation!

The 50th Anniversary Tall Ships Races 2006 With ARTEH

When you come to Lisbon to see this mythical nautical event take some time to visit the city and stay in a charming and different Hotel. The History of the event This Nautical Event has a particular significance for the City of Lisbon and for Portugal, as it commemorates not only the 50th Anniversary of the First Tall Ships' Race, but also the fact of these Races being idealized, in 1954, by the Portuguese Ambassador to the United Kingdom and the London Solicitor Bernard Morgan, with the aim of gathering together the Tall Ships still operative after the 2nd World War. The other objective was to provide a way for young trainees to embark on these Sailing Ships and thus improve their personal abilities and skills, through the work and life on board and cooperation with youngsters of other nationalities. Having succeeded to obtain the support of Lord Mountbatten and of the Duke of Edinburgh, these two seafarers, together with other influent people of the nautical world, formed a Commission to start to organize the Race, which was to be launched in 1956, with the participation of 20 large and medium Sailing Ships, amongst which were the old Sail Training Ship 'Sagres', now in Hamburg, and the yacht 'Bellatrix', property of the Ambassador, already dismantled. The success of this event was such that, since that date, the Races never ceased to happen, first, every two years and after 1964, annually, accompanying the refitting and the construction of more and more new ones, the number of Training Ships participating in these Races increased to 100 or 120 units, representing countries from Europe, North and South Americas, Asia and Oceania. Since 1956, the City of Lisbon has been connected to the Tall Ships' Races, having received the Sailing Ships and their crews participating in the Races from 1964 to 1998 coinciding with the World Expo 98 in Lisbon, as well as the City of Porto, which received this Race in 1994. The Race With about 80 Sailing Ships of various classes involved, amongst them some of the most impressive Sailing Ships of the world and the splendid Mir, built for the Russian Sail Training Association in Poland's Gdansk Shipyard in 1988, with 2,4 tons and 109 meters long, and a 2,7 square meter sail count. This race will start with the meeting of the Sailing Ships at St. Malo, France, from the 6th to the 9th July, from there leaving for the First Race, with the starting line off Torbay, in the South of England, and the finishing line in Lisbon, thus replicating the original course of the 1956 Race. The fleet of the participating ships, which is foreseen to start to enter the Tagus River as from the 17th July, will be offered an Official Program in Lisbon, from the 20th to the 23rd July, closing on this last day, with a Sail Parade along the Tagus River. Then, the Sailing Ships will follow in cruise to Cadiz in Spain, staying in this port from 26th to the 29th July, and from Cadiz, still in cruise, to La Coruna also in Spain, where they will stay from the 7th to the 9th August. Finally, on the 10th of August, the fleet will depart from La Coruna for the Second Race, finishing at Antwerp in Belgium, where they will stay from 19th to the 22nd August, participating in the final celebration of this important nautical event. The Lisbon Programme As from the 15th of July, expanding to the 20th and thru the 23rd of July, the Alcantara Dockyard, receiving this Race, will be transformed in a place of constant animation, offering Amusement, Culture and History thru the intensive contact with the things related with the sea and the nautical-maritime activities that go together with the realization of one of the biggest nautical events in the world. In the Historical and Cultural Centre of Lisbon near the busy Camoes Square and very close to the Sao Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon you have the luxurious and cosmopolitan Hotel do Bairro Alto, where many renowned European artists stayed during the 19th and 20th centuries. From the Terrace on the upper floor you can taste a drink and watch the Tall Ships Race. You also suggest Palacio Belmonte. This hotel is set in the historical city centre on the hill of the Sao Jorge Castle. We advise you to visit the Castle. The Palace was built in 1449, incorporating three towers, on a forty meter boulder over the most ancient moor and roman walls in the city. In 1640, the construction of a terrace and five classical facades served to augment the Palace. From the terraces you can also watch the nautical event.

Why Today's Bras Are Far From The Ones Your Grandmother Wore

Depending on how old you are, you may remember your first bra being a plain white cotton one, filled with embarrassing seams that showed through your tops. They closed in the backs and had uncomfortable straps that had you shrugging to adjust them throughout the day. Some of them were cone shaped, giving them a pointed appearance that made it look like your breasts could double as a weapon. Because of their plainness, you probably didn't own that many of them, replacing them only as you got older and your breast size increased or when they became too worn to give you the support that you needed.

Today that has all changed. Plain, utilitarian bras have become a thing of the past. Before, a lingerie drawer may have contained bras, panties and stockings. Now bras have become so stylish that they often warrant their own drawer in order to accommodate the number of them that are owned. Now bras come in so many shapes and sizes that they are a fashion unto themselves.

The pushup bra has become widely popular among women who have small breasts. Large breasts have always been coveted by women because of the sexual appeal they have to so many men. Many tops and dresses are designed to show healthy amounts of cleavage that the smaller breasted women could never before hope to have. The pushup bra creates the effect of a larger, fuller bust line and allows these women to now have the cleavage that before they could only covet.

Strapless bras are another great addition, thanks to the many tops and dresses that have spaghetti straps or are strapless themselves. Tube tops have come back in fashion and without a strapless bra, they can not be worn without some sort of jacket or top to cover the bra straps. Since this is a summer fashion wearing one demands that you also wear a strapless bra. No woman wants to be seen wearing a jacket when it 90 degrees outside.

Another great addition to bras types are the seamless ones. No longer do you have to worry about having a big, visible seam going across your chest when wearing your favorite tank top or sweater. These bras are made with foam and designed in such a way that there are no seams that can be displayed and ruin the look of your top.

For clothing that is designed to show a so much skin that not even a strapless bra will work with them, you can now get bras that are little more than stick-on cups. They come in two pieces, each to be worn on one breast and have an adhesive that keeps the piece in place so that support is maintained.
